Book review: Zoo City by Lauren Beukes
Rating: 3 out of 5
This book was the reason I bought the humble bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com/). I’d read the sample chapter via my kindle and thought it sounded like a good read.
It started really well, but I lost my engagement with it part way through. I liked the near-future aspect, similar to some of the William Gibson novels where the majority seems familiar, or only just not familiar, but with some interesting parallelism - in this case the notion of being animalled post committing a crime. Like the daemons of the northern lights trilogy but less ubiquitous.
Enjoyable, easy to read but didn’t capture my attention
Highlighted passages:
curled up like a furry comma on my laptop,
The tea tasted like stale horse piss drained through a homeless guy’s sock, but I drank it anyway,
This is why I can’t play poker. Nothing like having a giant furry tell to ruin your bluff.
