Book review: What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge
Rating: 3 out of 5
Another book chosen to read to Mum from the books I read under her guidance as a child. It has taken a few visits to get through and some of the tales are a bit on the moralistic side but it worked well enough as a story to read together. It has dated somewhat!
Highlighted passages:
“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost, For the want of a shoe the horse was lost, For the want of a horse the rider was lost, For the want of a rider the battle was lost, For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost, And all for want of a horse-shoe nail.”
Everything in the world has two handles. Didn’t you know that? One is a smooth handle. If you take hold of it, the thing comes up lightly and easily, but if you seize the rough handle, it hurts your hand and the thing is hard to lift. Some people always manage to get hold of the wrong handle.”
For you know we never do people good by lecturing; only by living their lives with them, and helping a little here, and a little there, to make them better.
