Sussex seems to be mainly mud at the moment, so we set out to find a less mud-filled walk. While wandering around Shinewater Lake yesterday, we’d spotted signs for the Cuckoo Trail. Being fans of disused railway line trails, we figured it would be a solid choice for drier footing.

We started in Hellingly, heading north on a mostly there-and-back route. There was an option to cut across fields following a signed public footpath, but this wasn’t a day for seeking out extra mud, so we stuck to the firm track. It was quite a popular route with cyclists, walkers, and dog walkers all sharing the path with consideration.

I enjoyed spotting the wooden wildlife carvings tucked beneath one of the bridges, finding them a lovely surprise that added some character to the route.
