Lake at Nostell Priory

Another transfer day (Lancashire to Rutland this time), another National Trust opportunity. This time Nostell. This one didn’t have charging, but it was a new one to us, and it also let us collect a stamp for Breezy’s Pooch Passport, completing the first page and earning her some treats.

Rows of trees looking down over green parkland at Nostell

This was a bigger place than I’d imagined. Not all the land in the photo above is accessible from the estate, but judging by the tree positioning as you look down, it almost certainly once was. We followed the Nostell Obelisk Walk.

Obelisk Lodge gateway at Nostell

We spent a little time looking at Obelisk Lodge - once home to the gateman’s family with a small room in each side of the building. Families lived in here until the 1950s (according to the information panel inside it). To get from one room to the other there was no option but to leave the (possible) warmth and (relative) comfort of one side of the building to walk over the path to the other door. It feels like pretty harsh conditions to raise a family.
