I’m not always a fan of the dual storyline method of story telling but it was used to good effect here allowing pieces to fit into place. I enjoyed spending time with Elly more than with Lisette - there’s something about the naivety of youth. Both of the time periods are also interesting and thought provoking and left me wondering “What would I have done?”

I was also interested in the idea of the synaesthesia that Elly has - hearing music for every person she sees, some that works with her own music, some that clashes, some loud, others silenced.

I like that the Author’s Afterword includes sources that the author read to get a feel for the period. I’ve downloaded kindle samples for some of them.
