The Colour Librarian at The Old Courthouse
Earlier in the year I’d seen this talk mentioned on the Brighton Museums what’s on page and had booked a couple of tickets. I thought it would be a fun thing to do on an April morning. The event was postponed and finally happened today.
I’ve had a fascination with colour for a number of years. Richard not so much. However, even he came away from the event full of admiration and interest after hearing two colour professionals with a passion for the subject discuss some formative works. It was fascinating.
I was particularly taken with Maerz and Paul’s “A Dictionary of Color” – page after page of grid squares showing how few colours we actually have names for and how language restricts what we can express.
There were also some interesting insights about people attempting to print books on colour in the 1830s, and how publication had to be delayed until they had developed a method to reliably represent colour in print.
A great way to spend an hour. I’ll certainly keep an eye out for other talks.
