Book review: Ten Poems to Open Your Heart by Roger Housden
Rating: 3 out of 5
I’ve continued my practice of reading poetry in bed with a cup of tea most work mornings. It seems a nice start to the day than getting sucked into the news, or views.
This book didn’t hold as many delights for me as some of the others, but there were still a few poems that stood out for me:
* The knowing by Sharon Olds
* Love at first sight by Wislawa Szymborska
* Kindness by Naomi Shibab Nye
Highlighted passages:
Great poetry, like great art, is a bridge between our heart and the heart of the world
From the poem “Love at first sight”
“Every beginning is only a sequel, after all, and the book of events is always open halfway through”
About the poem “Love” by Veela Milosz
As the sense of being somebody special - somebody deserving of special treatment and attention - falls away, the sense of belonging increases proportionally
When you are no longer centre stage you can allow others to breathe alongside you; you can appreciate their existence as being equal in value to your own
No longer the start in your own movie, you can feel a kinship with others that naturally gives rise to a sense of belonging.
To suffer with: this is the meaning of compassion.
and finally
Love is more like an electrical storm than a pension plan
