Book review: Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder
Rating: 4 out of 5
I read this to accompany the “Introduction to Philosophy” MOOC I did (on which more at http://jane.dallaway.com/introduction-to-philosophy). I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was recommended by a couple of people at work.
It’s an interesting format, but the pages of philosophy history made it quite dry in places, and a challenge to read. I normally read before going to sleep, and I found I couldn’t read many pages before my eyes drooped and the my head nodded.
I enjoyed it, but I could have done with it being shorter. I struggled a lot around the three-quarter mark, but the last few chapters changed pace and, combined with reading it first thing on the morning of a day off, allowed me to get into it a bit.
