There are plenty of points around the city where you can get a view over the river and get an idea of the buildings and the layout. We usually try and do this early in a visit to a new city, and the Sé do Porto proved to be a great place to get our bearings. Other good viewpoints were the top of the cable car, and the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal.
