Rating: 4 out of 5

Another book from the humble bundle I bought last year. After finishing Sophie’s World I wanted something simple, and non-thinky to read. This was perfect for that.

It’s a good story which kept me engaged and which I enjoyed reading. It’s a futuristic story, where the over 75s are the soldiers of off-world battles and we follow the progress of John, one such 75 year old.

The characters are what gives this story 4 stars from me. Even those we only meet for a few pages, are described well enough for me to get an idea of who they are, and what they stand for. And there are a wide array of perspectives covered.

Highlighted passages:

It’s easier to miss her at a cemetery, where she’s never been anything but dead, than to miss her in all the places where she was alive.

The human appeared to be new. At least I don’t remember the previous recruiter having that much hair. Or breasts.

The problem with aging is not that it’s one damn thing after another-it’s every damn thing, all at once, all the time.

Part of what makes us human is what we mean to other people, and what people mean to us.

(how comfortable can you really be with a race that sees you as a nutritious part of a complete breakfast).

Guns don’t kill people, the aliens behind the triggers do.
