Book review: Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link
Rating: 3 out of 5
I’m not a fan of short stories. And I didn’t actually realise that’s what this was. I read it as I had it on my kindle, and I was in a cottage in Wales without any form of internet. So I could only read what I had with me. I started reading the first chapter (or story as it turned out) and found it engaging and enjoyable so I continued. It was only when I got to the end of it that I discovered it was just a short story.
Some interesting stories, some that could have been longer, and some that could have been shorter. All well written and well imagined. But just not a format I like that much.
Highlighted passages:
If clothes are good, or even if they’re bad in an interesting way, The Garment District is where they go when they die. You can tell that they’re dead, because of the way that they smell. When you buy them, and wash them, and start wearing them again, and they start to smell like you, that’s when they reincarnate.
I know that smart doesn’t mean nice, or even mean that you have a lot of common sense. Look at all the trouble smart people get themselves into.
There is nothing as persistent, as loyal, as clingy as a dog.
