My almanac tipped me off about a lunar eclipse when I read it, as I try to do every month, at the beginning of the month. I popped a note in the calendar. Earlier this week, Richard did some checks and confirmed we’d be able to see it from the seafront, and the weather looked like it would give us clear skies. The simulation Richard had found suggested we’d lose the moon to the horizon before totality, so we decided to get out early.

So this morning, at approximately rude o’clock, our alarms went off, we woke the dog up, and we headed down to see. We saw almost all of it. From darkness into light as the sun rose. From a tiny nibble to total cover.

My first lunar eclipse. I spent a little time considering how this must have appeared to my ancient ancestors before science explained such things. But that may be doing them a disservice, given that such places as Avebury and Stonehenge have been in existence for quite some time.

Regardless, I’m glad we woke early and went down to the seafront to watch.

Photos, taken on my phone, don’t do it justice but at least provide a record for me. The first was taken at 5:32am, the last at 6:08am.
