Rating: 4 out of 5

I love the idea of this book, the idea that Maya Angelou would take time to write a letter to the daughters she didn’t have. I found some of the chapters lovely, and some didn’t hit the spot. But I leave having been reminded to take a chance on people, and to opt for kindness. A good companion to the Brené Brown books I’ve been reading this year.

Highlighted passages:

When I have seen pain, when I have found that my ineptness has caused displeasure, I have learned to accept my responsibility and to forgive myself first, then to apologise to anyone injured by my misreckoning

You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them

Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud

Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking

We may act sophisticated and worldly but I believe we feel safest when we go inside ourselves and find home, a place where we belong and maybe the only place we really do
