I licked it so it’s mine
I saw this sign on a restaurant wall in Manchester at the weekend. It made me think of my Grandma who almost certainly said this and definitely did this. She liked cakes and sweets. Liked is possibly an understatement. There are a couple of stories about her and her sweet tooth that still make me smile.
Firstly, when I was maybe 5 or 6 she came to see me and brought me some smarties. We started to play draughts and I shared my smarties with her. Mine were all lined up on my side of the board. She’d eaten hers. I had to leave the game briefly - maybe the toilet, maybe because my Mum had called me, I don’t remember. What I do remember is that by the time I got back to the table, she’d eaten all my sweets. I remember telling my Mum who merely answered “Yes. She would” 😂
The other story is about jelly babies. She was particularly fond of them but didn’t like to share. So, when she started eating a bag of jelly babies, she’d eat the head off every baby and would line it up on the arm of her chair. Only when she’d de-headed them all would she eat the bodies. She had, in effect, licked it so it was hers.
