my Fitbit stats and the Dictionary of numbers
The other day I posted about my fitbit and my stats for the past year. One of those was:
over the past year I’ve walked 2,119 miles, taking 4,827,668 steps to do so, and climbed 17,311 floors.
A few months ago, xkcd mentioned a chrome extension designed to give some context to large numbers - Dictionary of Numbers which is
an award-winning Google Chrome extension that tries to make sense of numbers you encounter on the web by giving you a description of that number in human terms. Like a dictionary describes words you don’t know in terms you do, Dictionary of Numbers puts quantities you’re unfamiliar with in terms you can understand. Because “8 million people” means nothing, but “population of New York City” means everything.
I have that installed on my work machine at the moment. Yesterday, I took a look at that fitbit stats post and noticed that my mile distance had been given context:
So, over the past year I’ve walked a distance that is the equivalent to the diameter of the moon. I can’t quite decide whether that makes it seem more or less. But whichever, it’s a fun fact!
