Farewell Lovefilm
We’ve been Lovefilm subscribers for a long time. This week Amazon has announced they’re killing the service at the end of October. I had a rush of sadness when I got their email. Unexpected sadness.
Yesterday, listening to Robbie Collins, standing in for Mark Kermode, on the Kermode and Mayo Film Review programme on Radio 5 gave a really good definition of what LoveFilm is. It’s the film service for your “best self”. The self who wants to watch great films, catch up on the back catalogue of favourite actors, explore new genres. Not the one who just wants to watch something now. The one who will be tempted by the most recent release, or most liked, or easily accessible.
I like this. And I like the idea of continuing to have a film service for my “best self”. So it looks like we’ll be heading over to Cinema Paradiso.
