While we were exploring Gibside, we discovered an art exhibit called Gap at Gibside. It included a film about the Dunston Staiths. I’d never heard of the place before and didn’t know what staiths were, but it sounded like the familiar story of an important heritage site being allowed to decay - not unlike Brighton’s own West Pier. So off we went for a look. I found it to be beautiful and a bit sad. I hope that the groups trying to restore the staiths achieve their aims, and the place gets a new lease of life.
