Book review: Drawing Autism by Jill Mullin
Rating: 4 out of 5
A really lovely collection of art and artists. A variety of styles, subjects, and reasons for producing their work.
Highlighted passage:
In response to a question “What inspired you to start painting?” Michael P McManmon answered “When I was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome in my fifties, it changed my life. I realised that I did not have to try to be perfect anymore. With my art, I began to experiment with colour and then painting. I decided that it did not matter if every work was perfect or complete. The same relates to my life - I decided to be more open to new ideas by default, instead of the opposite. I started to see things in a new perspective and I now see the beauty that I did not previously saw. I decided that I can experience the world in any way that I want. So, in this case, the diagnosis was a liberator rather than a cage”
