I was reading the summer edition of the National Trust magazine and came across a wonderful article about Orford Ness. It said:

Historic England has granted ‘scheduled monument’ (SM) status to several buildings on Orford Ness, leading the Trust to adopt a policy of ‘curated decay’ for many structures on site.

I love this concept of ‘curated decay’. It isn’t a phrase I’ve come across before. I enjoy visiting old industrial sites that have been left alone, where nature is starting to take over. There’s something so resourceful and resilient about it.

The article continues

The vibration test buildings - or “pagodas” - have been so affected by the salt water, exposed location and brutal weather that their erosion is inevitable. We maintain them as ruins, with minimal intervention.

I guess I’m going to be adding Orford Ness to my to-visit list!
