Somehow I missed these books as a child. After visiting Finland last week and perusing the Moomin store at Helsinki airport I thought I should have a read. I actually bought Finn Family Moomintroll and started reading that before realising that it was actually book number 3 and I should probably read number 2 first (number 1 wasn’t available for the kindle). So I started to read this one.

The writing is beautiful (or at least the translation is) being full of wonderful descriptions, and great little humorous comments.

An enjoyable read.

Highlighted passages:

‘We’d better only take the windfalls,’ said Moomintroll, ‘because mamma makes jam from these.’ But they had to shake the tree a little so that there were some windfalls.

he ran straight out into the breakers, without stopping to undress (because of course Moomintrolls don’t wear clothes, except sometimes in bed).

Suddenly the logs began to move, and produced legs, and then the whole mass slid silently under the water.

they pulled with all their might, until at last Moomintroll appeared over the edge. First his ears, then his eyes, then his nose (then still more nose) and eventually the whole of him.
