Book review: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Rating: 5 out of 5
To me, this is a story of love blossoming in a background of struggles. There’s disappointment, there’s a certain level of resignation, there’s a wonder of how much these characters can put up with, and there’s bewilderment in how much a country can change, or be changed, within a relatively short amount of time. It leaves me feeling grateful to be a western woman - a woman living in a time and place where I am allowed to be educated, to vote, to have independence to travel. It also leaves me determined not to let those liberties slip away unnoticed. It also leaves me hoping that the characters live a happy life and that the next set of troubles to hit Afghanistan don’t have a further toll on these gorgeous characters.
