Book review: A Bit of a Stretch: The Diaries of a Prisoner by Chris Atkins
Rating: 5 out of 5
I’ve heard Chris speak on the radio before - I think he probably gets airtime whenever there’s a new report or incident relating to the prison service. I knew very little about prison life, still don’t I guess but at least I now have one man’s experiences to draw on.
The book focuses, diary style, on Chris’s experiences in HMP Wandsworth. There is a little bit about life in an open prison where he finished his sentence but its focus is Wandsworth. Reading these experiences and learning of the often inhumane treatment that he witnessed and experienced and then projecting forward to COVID times and lockdowns did have an impact on me. Harsh conditions. Few education opportunities. Little access to turn a life around.
This was a kindle prime library book.
