The trig point at the summit of Pendle Hill

This was one of my favourite walks of the whole trip. Pendle Hill is mainly famous for being the hill that the Pendle Witches lived in the shadow of. It is also shy of being a mountain by about 50m.

We opted for the steeper ascent up the steps and a more gentle walk down by the side of a couple of reservoirs. The other way around would have been challenging due to the extra pull of a small enthusiastic terrier.

The view from the top of Pendle Hill

The view was pretty amazing, but it was the kind of walk that would have felt like an achievement even without it. I’m not sure why. I’d love to understand the essence of what makes a walk feel satisfying, so I could unlock that feeling more often.

At the top are some summit stones. Most of the stone is below the surface, with a natural theme having been sculpted into them. I’d noticed a sign at the bottom of the hill giving me a hint about them, which meant we took some time to notice them.

Pendle Way public footpath signs decorated with witches

I enjoyed the public footpath signs for the Pendle Way. I thought the witches looked rather cute and charming and were easily identifiable!
