Shortly before we came away, I was telling a neighbour about our forthcoming trip to Shropshire. He told me to look up the Long Mynd - he’d been gliding from the gliding club there and said the views were impressive. And there, in Shropshire: 40 Heritage & History Walks, was a walk named Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd. So that’s what we did. Or rather, what we attempted.

We deviated from the route a couple of times, partly due to the heat, the climbing, and the sheep. Breezy was too excited to remember how to drink water and breathe normally. The Lightspout waterfall was a highlight - well signposted by the National Trust and a welcome pause on a warm day.

The views across the heath and plateau were worth every step. But it was probably a walk better saved for a cooler day.
