Nikon 18-200mm lens

I'm still waiting for my 18-200mm Nikon lens - there really seems to be a shortage of these lenses in the UK at the moment. Jessops apparently have a 200+ on order, and of those 80 are already ordered for customers.

So, I'm still using my Sigma 30mm lens for all photos, and the more I use it, the more I love it. Hope I love the Nikon one too when it finally appears.

I too stayed on a Jessops waiting list for a while but they don't seem to have a good supply chain. In complete contrast there's what I believe is a great little camera shop in Chichester (West Sussex Cameras) who seem to be able to get them easily. They've got 2 for me in the last year and both times took less than a week to source then. Worth a go...(they're in Yellow Pages somewhere)

41 Places - All found

#06
Originally uploaded by Jane Dallaway.
Today I completed my mission to find and photograph all 41 of the 41 places.

I've spent 3 focussed sessions out looking, as well as spotting some whilst generally out and about. Today I had Richard's company and help, and he can be spotted in some of the photos from today.

I have enjoyed reading the stories in the locations in which they are set, and as an installation, for me at least, it has worked well combining story telling with a treasure hunt and giving me a challenge with my new camera.

41 places - 9 to go

Another accidental spot yesterday. I was heading into London for a Google Tech Talk and found myself at the station with time to spare so decided I'd hunt number 10.

I'm still hoping to head out at the weekend and hunt down the remaining 9.

Good luck. 14 is famously elusive and 34 takes a bit of finding, but the rest aren't too bad.

Good luck... the one on the pier seems to be tricky. Richard - the designer - couldn't find it at all yesterday. I'm hoping someone hasn't lifted it.

Crowborough Closure - a photo essay

eurotaxGlass's sign
When I listened to a Bobbi Lane interview recently about photo essays, and using photography to tell a story, I decided that I should give it a try, and that the closure of our offices in Crowborough was a good place to start. Not only did I have access to the building, but I have been there most days over the past 3 months when most of the closure activity has been going on. The resulting photo essay consists of photos taken over the past 3 weeks. It tells a personal story, taken from my perspective, and I'm sure that others would have chosen different elements to concentrate on.

The gallery was produced using lightroom's web module and requires flash.

I'm hoping to head out at the weekend and get some of the remaining 10. In the meantime, you can track my progress or take a look at what other people have found via the flickr 41places group.

I salute you. That's fantastic. I hope it doesn't kill you.

It's not easy. Technically, I am still on 39 myself.

There's a woman called Donna who's on 38...

2nd set of moo cards
Again great service from the guys at moo - I ordered my moo cards in the early hours of Friday morning and they've arrived today - I make that 3 working days - impressive. This time I got them make for my flickr identity. I'm very pleased with the results and look forward to handing them out soon.

More Moo cards ordered

I haven't finished off the last lot yet, but having been asked twice in the last two days where my photos can be found whilst I've been taking photos at events, I figured I should have some made with my flickr details on them. So, 100 nice shiny flickr branded Moo cards should be coming my way soon.

Kit Bag: Nikon D80

The Camera

My main camera is now the Nikon d80 (having upgraded from my Canon G3). I've had it only 10 days or so, but so far we're getting along just fine. I've experienced the same problem as many other d80 users - namely that it has a habit of overexposing (apparently it exposes for the blacks in the picture) but a quick adjustment on the exposure meter sorts that out. Other than that, no problems at all.

The Accessories

Lenses

So far I have one lens - the Sigma 30mm f1.4 - fortunately I love it. I wanted a fast lens for shooting some of the geek events I attend as light levels can be pretty variable.
I also have the Nikon AFS DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF on order.
Once I've got used to these lenses, I'll determine whether I need a more wide angle lens to add to collection.

Filters

I have one filter for the Sigma lens (62mm) and that is a UV filter. Over time, when I've worked out which lens I'm using in what circumstances I'll get a polarising, a Neutral Density and maybe some close up filters. I already have a 72mm UV filter ready for when my 18-200mm lens shows up.

Accessories

So far I have the following:

The Case

I've used my non-camera Crumpler bag a lot over the years, and it has just kept on going. So, I thought I'd give the Crumpler Pretty Boy 4000 XL a try. It looks fantastic, and fits everything I need (at the moment) into it without a problem.

41 places - Brighton Festival

I'd noticed a couple of people with photos of stories in the wild around Brighton (part of the 41 Places installation as it turns out). Yesterday I headed out armed with shiny new camera and downloaded map to see how many I could find.

I headed first for number 13, outside Churchill Square, and found that without difficulty. It wasn't all I found. As I stood there taking photos 2 guys wandered up and spoke to me, offering me a leaflet with the map on - I showed them my downloaded version, and took a copy of their slightly more weatherproof version - ink jet printer + rain = splodgy downloaded map :-(

As we stood talking I discovered that one of the guys was no other than William Shaw, the author. He mentioned that there was a flickr group for the installation, and in the absence of any other way to remember this I handed him one of my moo cards. He recognised my name, and so we chatted a bit more and realised that he is one of my Brighton Bloggers.

We moved on, and I headed off to find some more, and discovered that I was following them. I realised that I'd missed an opportunity and that I should have taken a photo of William with his artwork. Fortunately they stopped at number 12 to make sure I spotted it, and so I shot this photo.

All in all I managed to find 8 of the places yesterday, and I've put together a page charting my progress. I'm hoping to find some more at the weekend..

In my defense I'd like to say that I don't spend all my time hangning around hoping to find someone photographing the artwork... I'd just been to Borders for a meeting about stocking the book there.

But I still do get giddy with excitement when I see people reading them. For that reason, I love your 41 page.

It's very Pokemon - Catch Them All...
